New Jersey Faces Biggest Fear in New Study

Just in time for Halloween, a new study by Casino.ca surveyed 3,000 Americans, asking not just what terrifies them, but how often those worries occupy their thoughts, and if they would face their fears for $1,000.

So what strikes fear in the hearts of New Jerseyans? Enclosed spaces like cramped elevators.  One respondent revealed they were “so determined to avoid a cramped elevator that they ascended a staggering 67 flights of stairs just to make it to their interview,” according to the survey.

Other states afraid of cramped spaces included: Iowa, Oregon and Idaho.

Death takes the top spot as the biggest fear in America, with 17 states naming it their number 1 dread. Among those fearing the inevitable are states like New York, Texas, California, Nevada, Colorado, and even New Hampshire.

Americans in Pennsylvania, Michagan, Maryland and DC are afraid of heights, while Mississippi, Maine, and West Virginia residents are rattled by snakes.

Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Indiana participants are aftrid of public speaking, while  Louisiana and Kentucky fear failure. Spiders give residents of Massachusetts and New Mexico the creepy crawlies, while Montana fears ghosts and spirits.

As for that $1,000? 33 percent say they would face their fears as long as safety is guaranteed.

  2. Visiting a graveyard at night: 21%
  3. Walking through a haunted house: 21%
  4. Exploring a corn maze: 18%
  5. Watching a horror movie alone: 13%
