Micky Dolenz to Release EP of R.E.M. Songs

Monkees icon Micky Dolenz is in a shiny, happy mood, and will spread those good vibes on a forthcoming EP covering the music of R.E.M.

Dolenz Sings R.E.M. will be out on November 3, and he’s giving fans a taste with a cover of “Shiny Happy People,” produced by Michael Nesmith’s son, Christian.

“Once again, this EP reaffirms my long-held conviction that a solid recording always begins with solid material,” Dolenz said in a statement. “You don’t get much more solid than R.E.M. What a joy to sing these classics and honor a team of outstanding writers.”

R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe already gave the EP the seal of approval in an interview with Rolling Stone.

These songs are absolutely incredible. Micky Dolenz covering R.E.M. Monkees style, I have died and gone to heaven,” he said. “This is really something. ‘Shiny Happy People’ sounds incredible (never thought you or I would hear me say that!!!). Give it a spin. It’s wild. And produced by Christian Nesmith (son of Michael Nesmith). I am finally complete.”

Dolenz previously collaborated with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, who co-wrote the title track for The Monkees’ final album, Christmas Party, and appeared on the record.

Other songs on the EP include Radio Free Europe,” “Man on the Moon,” and “Leaving New York.”

The project will be released via 7A Records, and will be available on special yellow vinyl. Pre-orders are ongoing.
