Greg Kihn Passes Away at 75

Greg Kihn has passed away at the age of 75 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to his website.

Kihn was best known for his hits, “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em)” and “Jeapordy,” and was a well known on-air personality in San Francisco for nearly two decades.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 10, 1949, Kihn moved to the Bay Area in the 1970s, releasing his first album in 1976. Locally, he was a friend to New Jersey, performing as part of Light of Day in the battle against Parkinsons, and his cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Rendevous.”

“With a unique songwriting style that blended folk, classic rock, blues and pop, his sound helped define a rich musical legacy in the San Francisco Bay Area scene. Greg rose to worldwide fame in the 1980s and left an indelible mark for generations to come,” said a statement on his website.

“Rest in peace, dear Greg. Your music, your voice, your stories, your spirit and your passion will forever echo in our hearts and inspire countless souls,” the statement went on to say.

Calling in to 1071 The Boss in 2018, Kihn told midday host Michele Amabile that “The Breakup Song” remained his favorite song.

“Of all the songs I have written over my lifetime, that is still my favorite song song, and I guess it must be because of the ‘uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,” he said.
