David Byrne’s Broadway show Here Lies Love to Close This Month
Talking Heads front man David Bryne’s latest play, Here Lies Love, will close this month due to poor ticket sales, Variety reports.
The show –which takes place at the Broadway Theatre at 1681 Broadway– will take its final bow on Nov. 26.
The play, a musical about the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, was co-written with Fatboy Slim, known for his hit, “Praise You.” It features an all Filipino cast. The theater was completely redesigned as a night club, with the orchestra seats removed to create a dance floor where audience members can stand among the performers.
In a statement, the producers said, “Succeeding on Broadway means not only producing excellent work with artistic merit — it also means creating the audience for it. And how much time it takes to find and grow new audiences is out of sync with the tight timeframes for audience-building and awareness.”
The show–which so far ran for 33 previews and 150 performances- will be filmed for the archives of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The show may travel overseas for international productions in Japan and Australia.
