Bruce Springsteen Covers Jesse Malin’s ‘She Don’t Love Me Now’ for Benefit Album
Bruce Springsteen is continuing to catch the sounds of sweet soul music with his latest offering, a cover of “She Don’t Love Me Now,” which is the third single off of the upcoming Jesse Malin tribute album, Silver Patron Saints: The Songs Of Jesse Malin. The 27-track collection is set for release on September 20th.
Springsteen, who recently released 2022 album of soul covers, ‘Only the Strong Survive,” captures what Malin describes as a “Stax-soul-thing that we were dreaming of when we recorded the original,” with the new 2024 version featuring a strong saxophone solo from E Street Band member Jake Clemons, who joined Malin’s band on the recording.
“It’s so surreal to me,” says Malin, who recorded the song for his 2015 album, New York Before The War.
“Bruce’s generosity, honesty and support are equally as powerful as his songwriting and performing,” says Jesse. In 2007, Springsteen duetted on Malin’s song “Broken Radio,” written for his late mother. “Bruce is one of the guys. He walks it like he talks it. You spend some time with him, and it feels like you’ve known him for years. He’s like my friends in Queens, sitting around talking about Sinatra, The Clash and The Pogues. He has that passion and excitement for life.”
Malin adds, “While I was working hard on my recovery at a clinic in Argentina, I had no idea that my friends and the producers of this record were reaching out to so many great artists to have them do versions of my songs,” says Malin.
“When I heard these versions, especially “She Don’t Love Me Now,” it took me out of a dark time. I felt excited about life again, in a way that only music can do,” he said.
Malin suffered a rare spinal stroke in May, 2023, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down, shortly after commemorating the one-year anniversary of the passing of his D Generation band mate Howie Pyro. Malin, who was scheduled to appear in Red Bank at a benefit for Fulfill honoring 1071 The Boss Springsteen on Sunday host Tom Cunningham, felt a pain in his lumbar region that slowly migrated to his hips, through his thighs and into his heels.
Murphy’s Law singer Jimmy G –who was joining Malin for dinner–carried him from the restaurant to Mount Sinai Hospital. Last December, Malin told Rolling Stone, “I have a lot of anxiety and insomnia. Your mind goes into some dark places. But I just have to keep a positive outlook and believe.” He is now undergoing a strict daily regimen with physical therapy and stem-cell treatments.
“I am getting some strength back in my legs, but it moves a lot slower than I would like. I don’t want to portray it like I’m ready to do the James Brown splits onstage. I definitely have a long way to go, but I’m blessed and so grateful for the amazing fans and friends that I have,” he told Rolling Stone.
Malin will return to the stage at the Beacon Theatre in New York City for the largest hometown shows of his career. December 1 and December 2. Malin will perform a full set with his band, followed by special guests on each show including Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, Butch Walker, J Mascis, Adam and David Immy of Counting Crows, The Hold Steady, Alejandro Escovedo with more guests to be announced.
