New Jersey native Brooke Alexx represented The Garden State loud and proud with her catchy new song, “I Don’t Take Pictures Anymore,” Monday night (April 5) on NBC’s “American Song Contest,” and even in Los Angeles she was feeling the love.

“So many people here are from Monmouth County or Bergen County,” she told reporters, including 1071 The Boss mid-day host Michele Amabile, backstage.

“It felt awesome,” the Old Tappan pop singer told Amabile of her time on the big stage. “I felt so supported by all of New Jersey and I hope they loved my performance.”

Alexx is one of 56 contestants competing on the show-an American version of Eurovision. Each contestant represents a different state. While some artists are unsigned or up-and comers, others are professionals.  Jewel (Alaska), Sisqó (Maryland), Macy Gray (Ohio), Jordan Smith (Kentucky) and Michael Bolton (Connecticut) are appearing on the show.

The song–about not posting as many pictures on social media–was written with co-writers and friends Brandon Meagher and Autumn Buysse one year ago.

“I just walked into the session with that title and they helped me turn it into magic and now it’s on this stage for all of America to see, it’s pretty amazing,” she said.

The genesis of the song, she explained, came from a phone conversation with a friend.

“I was on a phone call with a friend and talking about how growing up in the age of social media with Facebook and Instagram, I used to take hundreds of photos and post on the internet so people would think I was cool, ” she said. “I realize I don’t do that as much now that I am in my twenties, and I was wondering if that is because I have become secure with myself and matured or if it’s because I am jaded and that life doesn’t excite me as much as it used to.”

The performance began with Alexx laying down on a bed in a pink bathrobe surrounded by Polaroids in what she explained to reporters was a recreation of her childhood bedroom. The pop singer incorperated a wig toss, costume reveal, a Nickelodeon shout-out in the lyrics, pyro, a nod to her Asian American heritage represented by her back-up dancers, and a kick to the TV screen.

“This show is literally my dream coming true,” she said.

The “American Song Contest” jury had in it 5th place at the end of the show but fans are having their say now via nbc.com, the NBC App and TikTok. Check out the performance below.

Alexx may have an edge with TikTok voting, as most of her fan base fervently supports her on the platform.

“I owe a lot of my musical success to Tik Tok, so I am super happy that Tik Tok is involved,” she said.

“American Song Contest” –hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg–airs every Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
