Journey Is Back With Brand New Song (Video)

Journey is releasing a brand new song today (June 24), and is treating fans to an animated video on its YouTube Channel.

The song–“The Way We Used to Be”–features new members bassist Randy Jackson, drummer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist Jason Derlatka — along with founder and guitarist Neal Schon, longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain and frontman Arnel Pineda,

The video references the past year following a couple through the Covid-19 pandemic (first on the couch, then seeing the news and donning masks–and finally to a happy ending. The members of Journey get animated as well, with Schon playing a ripping solo atop a bus.

“The Way We Used to Be” is the first new song Journey has released since Jackson, Walden and Derlatka joined the band in May 2020, following the firing longtime bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith. The group is scheduled to play this summer at Lollapalooza.

In an interview with Rolling Stone this past January, Schon talked about the new project and lineup, saying, “It still sounds very much like Journey thanks to the songwriting, my guitar playing, and the vocals. But the rhythm section is definitely a powerhouse. Narada has been known for years, and Randy…is a completely monstrous bass player.”
