Florida football fans honored the late Tom Petty in between the third and fourth quarter of the Florida Gators football game with a singalong of one of his biggest hits.
Thousands of voices joined as one in remembrance of the Gainesville, Florida native with a rendition of “I Won’t Back Down” at Ben Griffin Stadium as the Gators faced LSU at its homecoming game on Saturday (Oct. 7). The song was played over the loudspeakers.
Petty was rushed to hospital Sunday night (Oct. 1) after suffering cardiac arrest in his home. The 66-year old musician was briefly put on life support, and passed away the next day.
The Gators paid tribute to Petty on Twitter earlier this week.
