Tom Petty Box Set For September Release

Nearly one year after his death, a box set of unreleased music by the late Tom Petty is set for release on Sept. 28.

The box set, An American Treasure, will include four CDs of previously unreleased live and studio material and alternate versions of 60 songs in total, compiled by Petty’s daughter Adria, his wife Dana, longtime Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and veteran Petty engineer Ryan Ulyate. It dates from the beginnings of the Heartbreakers to recent years.

The set was teased by a countdown clock on Petty’s website, which began earlier this week and expiring at 10 a.m. on Wednesday (July 11).

The set could include the second disc of an expanded version of the 1995 Rick Rubin produced “Wildflowers” that was announced in 2015 but has not been released. The sessions from that album includes a treasure trove of unreleased songs, some of which made it to the soundtrack of the film, She’s The One.

Petty died Oct. 2 of an accidental overdose of pain medications.
