Legendary E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame at The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park Sunday night (May 6), and had s special guest as presenter: Bruce Springsteen.

Springsteen was a surprise addition to an evening honoring the Class of 2017, which included Blondie’s Debby Harry, Gloria Gaynor, The Four Seasons, and more. Whoopi Goldberg hosted. Joe Piscopo, Mariano Rivera, John Roberts, Mark Ballas and Tommy James were on hand as well to present.

“One look at Steve, and I knew that we both drunk the same Kool-Aid,” laughed Springsteen.

“Steve is one of the greatest living white soul performers we have,” he said. “He is the sole creator of the male babushka — a man who, not unlike Hugh Hefner, had managed to spend his whole life in his pajamas.”

Speaking to The New 107.1 The Boss on the Red Carpet, Van Zandt–already a member of the Hall as a member of the E Street Band–reflected on his induction as a solo artist, and talked about his role at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame choosing records to be inducted in a new category.

“It feels like fun,” he tells Michele Amabile. “It’s nice.”
