Steve Van Zandt to Support Striking Los Angeles Teachers
Steven Van Zandt is lending his voice in solidarity with teachers in Los Angeles today (Jan. 16) as he will join the picket line for day three of an ongoing strike at Hamilton High School.
Van Zandt will stand with United Teachers Los Angeles and the LAUSD teachers on the line today and at a scheduled news conference alongside Alex Caputo Pearl (UTLA President), Diane Ravitch (Professor and national public education advocate) and Arlene Inouye (UTLA Officer and Bargaining Chair) to address the ongoing issues in the district.
Van Zandt, known for his role as a member of Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and his acting roles on The Sopranos and Lillyhammer, is a strong supporter of education. He is the founder of the non-profit Rock and Roll Forever Foundation to get arts back into the classroom by integrating the arts throughout K-12 classrooms via rich, standard-aligned lesson plans and hands-on teacher workshops, all delivered to educators and districts at no cost.
He is also the founder of TeachRock, the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation’s national initiative to bring popular music history curriculum into schools across the country by using the history and culture of music to engage students in all disciplines.
Van Zandt and his band, The Disciples of Soul, just completed a 28-date national tour –strategically routed in cities where teachers were either on strike or considering striking–in support of educators titled the “Soulfire Teacher Solidarity Tour.” The concerts were free for educators and each show began with Van Zandt and his TeachRock staff hosting professional development workshops demonstrating how to implement their standards-aligned arts integration curriculum into their schools.
