Report: Meat Loaf Taps American Idol Caleb Johnson for New Show

When Caleb Johnson competed on American Idol, the Season 13 winner was often compared to superstar rocker Meat Loaf.

Now comes word that Johnson, 27,will be stepping into the Texas titan’s shoes in a new tour, “Back Out of Hell.” The show will feature Meat Loaf himself, talking about his iconic songs and telling tales of how they came to fruition while the big-voiced Johnson will step out of the shadows to perform the classics that have stood the test of time.

Why is Meat Loaf choosing to present his life story in this way? A source tells the U.K. newspaper The Sun that this is a well thought out plan that Meat Loaf believes will work in a theatrical context.

“He’s been relying on pre-recorded vocal tracks for a while but doesn’t want to face accusations of miming on a huge tour, so he is passing the baton on to Caleb, who he’s a big fan of,” said the source.

Johnson wouldn’t be the first American Idol to step into the shoes of a classic rock icon. Season 4 runner-up Bo Bice fronts Blood Sweat and Tears, while Season 8 runner up Adam Lambert tours with Queen.

The “Back out of Hell” tour will be an international trek but only will include a limited number of performances. In addition, the newspaper says Meat Loaf is hoping to eventually bring the show to Las Vegas.
