Remembering Tom Petty: Watch New Video from ‘An American Treasure’

One year ago today (Oct. 2), the world lost Tom Petty, who passed away of an accidental overdose of pain medication at age 66.

To mark the one-year anniversary, a new video for one of the expansive 60 tracks included on the new box set, An American Treasure, has premiered on the late Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s official YouTube channel.

The song– “Gainesville”– is an homage to Tom’s Florida hometown, and is a previously unreleased track recorded during sessions for the 1999 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album Echo.

Petty’s daughter, Adria, spoke to CBS News This Morning to discuss the sometimes painful process of curating her father’s work for the collection.

“I was the one who was like, ‘let’s call it ‘An American Treasure.’ Because he was one,” Adria said.   “For me there was definitely moments when people would find me in my pajamas crying listening to tracks, but it’s something you have to do in service to the art and the man.”

An American Treasure isn’t the last music fans will hear from her father, Adria promised. She says there are more tracks in the archives.

“”There’s so much more,” she said. “There’s so much more beautiful stuff out there.”
