New Video for Tom Petty’s “For Real” a Celebration of His Life, says Daughter (Video)
Tom Petty’s daughter, Adria, is paying tribute to her late father with a new video celebrating his career.
The visually poignant clip accompanies the track, “For Real,” which is included on the new Petty compilation, The Best of Everything. The song sums up how the late singer felt about his life as a musician, and Adria celebrates that life with highlights from his career, including his appearance at the Super Bowl with The Heartbreakers and a montage of magazine covers.
“I did it for real; would have done it for free,” sings Petty as the viewer is treated to a series of concert shots and rehearsal footage.
Although she admitted to crying her “eyes out,” while making the video, Petty raised her to always finish her work. The song, she said, hit “pretty hard.”
“I was told he wrote in his hotel room the night before, and it feels very raw and sincere. It really stood out as something pretty profound, sort of from the grave, right? Just a real assessment of his strange reality of being a living legend. It touches on the things my dad believed in, his core values, like being authentic and not just being part of the pastiche of pop culture,” she tells Rolling Stone.
She added that there is plenty more in the archives that will see the light of day.
“In the last year and a half, there’s been an awful lot of stuff to take the time to dig into. We haven’t even listened to one percent of that yet…You look at the amount of unreleased music and every interview he did, and you say, ‘How did you find the time?,” she continued. “You were only alive 66 years. There’s so many more years of work here!’ Sometimes I feel a little sad thinking, ‘No wonder you weren’t home — you were busy working your ass off.'”
