Bono Celebrates 59th Birthday as U2 Tops the UK Rich List
It’s Bono’s birthday, and the 59-year old U2 front man is celebrating the news that his band is now ranked as the third wealthiest entertainment act in the UK.
U2 as a whole have a collective worth of $759 million, reports the Sunday Times.
So is the wealthiest? That would be musical theatre auteur Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has amassed nearly $1.1 billion in his career. Webber in the top spot unseats former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney stimated worth of $974 million, down from $1.1 billion in 2018. That drop may have something to do with his wife, trucking heiress Nancy Shevell, which took a hit this year because Shevell’s family company declared bankruptcy. McCartney should close that shortfall with his current, “Freshen Up,” tour, about to launch this month.
Rounding out the list are Rolling Stones band mates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards at #5 and #6, with fortunes of $358 million and $338 million.
The Beatles are well represented as well, with the late George Harrison’s widow and son, Olivia and Dhani Harrison, valued at $325 million. Drummer Ringo Starr follows at #8 with $312 million.
Former Police frontman Sting rounds out the top 10 with a $260 million fortune; he finished just behind Riverdance star Michael Flatley, who’s worth $265 million.
The members of Queen are starting to reap the fortunes of the success of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, with big increases in the $33 million dollar range.
